Many people nowadays choose to purchase a car secondhand, from either a dealership or private seller. There are many advantages to buying a used car, from lower purchase costs to cheaper insurance – and it can be better for the environment. However, the used car market can be a minefield, and it’s important to make sure that you’re getting the best deal possible.
If you’re thinking about buying a second hand car and want to make sure you’re getting a worthwhile investment, read on for our top tips of what to look for when buying a used car.
Check all paperwork
Paperwork can be dull, but it’s vital to thoroughly read through any documents that come with the car before making a purchase. Check the V5C notebook to make sure the listed keeper is selling the car from the address stated, and check the number plate and registration against those listed. You should also look at receipts to make sure the seller has proof of ownership.
Inspect the car carefully
Ideally, you should view any second hand car in daylight and clear weather. Rain or bad lighting can hide chips or scratches in the paintwork, so it’s best to give a vehicle a once over in bright daylight. Older cars may have a few scuffs which is to be expected, but make sure there’s no major damage to any panels, that the windows open easily and the air conditioning works properly.
Take it for a test drive
This is a vital step to make sure you feel comfortable handling the vehicle, and to see how it performs. Focus on how easy the car is to start, if there are any unusual noises coming from the engine and how efficient are the brakes? You should also note the exhaust if possible, too much smoke or fumes could be a sign that the car isn’t in great condition.
Check what’s included in the price
Look to see if a spare wheel and repair kit are included, as well as a vehicle handbook and spare keys, as these can be expensive to replace. You’ll also need to know if the car has up to date tax, an MOT and service history, and whether any other accessories are included, such as a car jack or locking wheel nuts.
