While many of us now like to holiday abroad, partly thanks to the rise of cheap and readily available flights, sometimes you can’t beat the charms of a classic British holiday. Caravan holidays first gained popularity in the 1930s, and they continue to be a popular choice for families who want to save money, or simply experience the best the UK has to offer.
We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to options, with a wide variety of beaches, coastlines and other picturesque spots to explore from the comfort of a caravan. More practical than a tent, but more affordable than a hotel (plus, the convenience of driving from place to place), if you’re thinking of taking a caravan holiday soon, read on for some of the best spots on offer.
Snowdonia, North Wales
There’s plenty to do for adventure lovers if you park near Wales’s highest mountain, including hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting, or even climbing the mountain itself. Pitch a caravan amongst a stunning landscape of mountains and woodlands, and explore Snowdonia’s national park, lakes, trails and idyllic seaside villages.
Polperro, Cornwall
This quaint fishing village on Cornwall’s south east coast is considered one of the best caravanning spots in the region. The area is close to popular attractions including the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, and there’s plenty of unspoilt natural landscape to explore. Pitch at the popular Great Kellow Farm, which offers spectacular sea views, a quiet spot away from busy roads, and all the facilities you need including electricity hookups and hot showers.
The Lake District
The Lake District is one of the most popular holiday spots in the UK, and it’s easy to see why. There are plenty of rugged mountains and lakes to explore, and excellent places to park including 2016 Holiday Park of the Year, Park Cliffe. The park provides spacious pitches among unspoilt countryside, and there’s plenty to make visitors comfortable, including a shop, bar and restaurant.
Trewethett Farm, Cornwall
Based on a cliff top, Trewethett Farm caravan park gives spectacular views over the sandy beaches of Bossiney Cove, with nearby access to the south west coastal path running alongside the park. Polzeath beach is easily reached (around 10 miles from the site), plus there’s easy access to the town of Tintagel and the medieval harbour of Boscastle.
