Check Your Insurance
This seems like an obvious one, but never assume that your insurance covers you across the Channel as you might get caught short. Make sure you double-check that your insurance will cover you for the entire length of time that you’ll be away – with a little leeway just in case – and also that you put another passenger on the policy for the duration of the trip.
Make Sure You’re Aware of Speed Limits and Road Rules
Speed limits and road regulations often differ from country to country across Europe, so it’s imperative that you are clued up on all of the necessary laws in all of the countries that you are driving through. Some countries are more strict than others and, if you break the law, you could face a heavy fine and even have your caravan impounded. It’s simply not worth it, so you’ll need to know the rules back to front.

France
Our nearest neighbour just across the Channel, France, is perfect for a spot of caravanning because it’s simply not too difficult to get to. There are a number of caravan parks lining the coast, but we recommend La Garangeoire Campsite near the Bay of Biscay. You can drive from Calais, or even get a ferry straight from Portsmouth to St Malo.
Switzerland
Switzerland is world-famous for its beautiful mountains and stunning scenery, which makes it a wonderful place to set up your caravan and get some fresh air. The Jungfrau Campsite in Switzerland is our personal recommendation and is accessible after a beautiful 9-hour drive from Calais.
